Callas, Maria (1923-1977) American-born Greek soprano considered by many to be the most exciting opera singer of her time. Her wide-ranging repertoire included the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini, as well as the works of Verdi and Puccini, and, in her early career, the music dramas of Wagner.
