1879 Grant Presidential Medal. Julian PR-15. Bronze, 76 mm. In the 1870's, the official mint circular listed a presidential medal of Grant as being for sale, but actually no medal had yet been struck at all. In order to rectify this mistake, in 1878, William Barber suggested that a medal should be struck. With a photo of Grant, William and Charles Barber completed the dies in 1879, and the medals were finally available to the public on March 14, 1879. The medal is in Gem UNC condition with smooth even toning on both sides. This medal is actually very rare and only couple examples could be located in the past decades. Some people questioned the listed striking date on the Julian book, but it is a product of the U.S. Mint for sure and the mintage should be pretty low.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

Realized $353
