1876 U.S. Centennial Commission Medal. Julian AM-10. Bronze, 76 mm. The original design for this important celebration medal was made by Henry N. Mitchell to strike a 4-inch medal at the Philadelphia Mint. However, they soon noticed that with the existing equipment in the mint, it would be impossible to make a sufficient quantity of large format medals on time. Therefore, a reduced 3-inch hub was made and the mint started to strike this smaller format in 1878. Only 27 silver and 123 copper 4-inch medals were struck, and about several thousands of 3-inch medals were produced, including the presented piece. Nicely toned UNC with edge damage.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

Realized $294
