Lot 62

1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1803 VG8. Struck over an Off-Center Large Cent. Attractive glossy medium brown with smooth surfaces. There are a few trivial contact marks on both sides, all consistent with the grade. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0. The curl left of the date is complete and strong, and traces of die rust are visible around LIBE. This piece was struck over an off-center large cent. A couple of the leaves from the reverse of the large cent are visible at the 2 in the date, and the bottom of a letter (possibly an F from OF) is clearly visible under that 2. In addition an obvious arc of deeply impressed incuse dentils from a brockage impression (probably from a half cent based on the curve of the arc) is located over ES-O. A nice example of a multiple mint error. And the overdate feature remains easily visible in spite some confusion caused by the undertype large cent details in that area. Weight 85.6 grains.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Mike Patton 1/26/1980.
