Lot 232

1812 S-289 R1 Turban Head, Large Date EF40. Ten points sharper with extremely faint granularity hidden under frosty dark olive brown and steel toning. The roughness is barely visible under strong 16x magnification. No marks or other distractions. Sharply struck EDS, Breen's rare state I. The repunching on the date is visible on all 4 digits. Nice eye appeal in spite of the relatively dark color. Removed from a PCGS slab called Genuine, Unc Details, Cleaning (this cent was not cleaned). The PCGS label is included, #36508.92/31819702, and it shows the S-289 attribution. Comes with an important provenance.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex Louis Eliasberg, Sr., Bowers & Merena 5/20/1996:536-Tom Reynolds 5/2011-William R. Eckberg.
