Lot 1821

1814, 4 over 3. NGC graded MS-64. Frosty, untoned, and well struck. The obverse displays some die clashing from the shield on the reverse, seen as parallel lines on Liberty's ear and to the right. Clashing occurs when the dies strike each other without a coin planchet, thus the dies impart portions of their designs into each other--that later show up on coins that are struck later. An exceptional coin and offering as precious few examples retain the glorious surfaces of this piece let alone the top grade from NGC for this overdate issue. The remnants of the top of the 3 are visible on either side of the 4. There are believed to be fewer than 100 of these that exist today. From that meager group, this is clearly one of the finest seen. Only 15,454 struck. Pop 8; none finer at NGC. Tied for the finest examples graded at both services. (PCGS # 8117) .
Estimated Value $40,000 - 44,000.

Realized $54,050
