Lot 1816

1806. Round 6. 7 x 6 Stars BD-6 Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-62. An appealing example of this highly sought after type. This piece exhibits phenomenal originality and is bursting with luster. It is predominantly untoned but has a trace of underlying golden hues which beautifully accent the majestic design elements of this coin. The obverse shows a hint of peripheral adjustment marks in the dentils, but the fields and devices pleasing for the modest grade assigned. On the reverse, the eagle shows a touch of softness in the strike on his arrow claw, which is diagnostic to this variety. Most of the die produced to coin half eagles in 1806 have a pointed 6, but a single obverse die has the knobbed 6, and this die lasted though a considerable number of strikes, as this is one of the more plentiful half eagles of the type. Only 54,417 struck. Pop 71; 100 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8089) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.
