Lot 1682

1806, 6 over 5. 7 x 6 Stars. BD-2, Rarity 5. NGC graded MS-60. Untoned with some luster evident. This is a very rare coin in any grade, especially so in mint state. The dies were reingraved, after they had struck 1805 quarter eagles, with a new 6 date punch placed over the existing 5. To do this the dies had to be softened and hardened again. This makes the die steel brittle, and prone to cracking, which developed here quickly on the 1806/5 issue. The number minted before the dies broke further, came in at only 480 struck. Survivors are limited, perhaps 35 to 40 are known, and several of those with significant problems. Here is a solid representative of this rare overdate and historic quarter eagle. Pop 2; 6 finer, 2 in 61, 3 in 62, 1 in 63.
Estimated Value $65,000 - 70,000.
