Lot 1665

1857-D. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC Approved. Light gold tone and exceptionally well preserved for a coin which scarcely circulated. Luster resides in the fields and the strike is reasonably sharp for this Dahlonega date, but shows the characteristic softness on the upper reverse. The finest seen by PCGS is a hair's breadth finer at MS-62, and this is a rarity in all grades, especially so this well preserved. David Akers noted that this date and mint is "one of the most underrated of all Type III gold dollars". Needless to say, any specialist would do quite well to secure this fantastic example of this rare and challenging Dahlonega issue. Only 3,533 struck. Pop 19; 15 finer, 2 in 60, 7 in 61, 6 in 62. (PCGS # 7546) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

Realized $6,756
