Lot 1422

1865. NGC graded Proof 68. Wonderful rainbow toning envelops both the obverse and reverse with rich shades of teal, rose, gold, green and russet. The strike is bold throughout, as expected for a proof. However, what is entirely unexpected, and indeed extraordinary is the exceptional quality of the surfaces. There are no distracting nicks or cuts in the fields, or breaking the frost on Liberty or the eagle. Such quality is simply miraculous on such a large coin struck at the tail end of the Civil War. This is the sole and finest certified at either grading service and is undoubtely the finest known of this date to survive in proof. In fact it is one of the finest of the entire series in proof and will make an important acquisition for even the most advanced collection. Only 500 struck. Pop 1; none finer at NGC. The finest graded proof of the date at both services.
Estimated Value $70,000 - 80,000.

Realized $102,813
