1836. Reeded Edge. PCGS graded AU-50. Nicely toned. The 1836 Reeded Edge half dollars were the first coins struck on the Mint's new steam operated press. This long sought advance allowed the coiners to monitor the strikes and keep them consistent through the day, unlike the variation from human powered coining presses. The steam driven machine did not tire as the day wore on. The engraving of dies dramatically changed with this new technology as well, as entire dies could be made from a master hub, and no longer were engravers needed to punch indivdual letters and stars into each working die by hand. Only the date needed to be added to each die as the primary maaster hub could last for years to create many working dies. This particular issue has always been popular with collectors for its historic event of steam driven coinage, as well as its rarity. This attractive About Uncirculated coin will no doubt be a centerpiece of an advanced collection. Only 5,000 struck. Pop 26; 100 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6175) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,800.
