Lot 1065

1916. Doubled Die Obverse. NGC graded AU-55. Nice and bold, medium russet and pinkish nickel toning. The key date Buffalo Nickel series and lacking from most collections in any grade because of the rarity of this doubled die that survived in small numbers, and usually in much lower grades than offered here. The dramatic double die obverse is one of the most obvious blunders of the 20th century, and has long been included with the main Buffalo nickel collection. Here is one of the finer examples, which offers the bold doubling on the date, feathers and profile of the Chief, as well as a full horn on the reverse. Pop 20; 17 finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
