Lot 1566

1833. JR-6. . R-6. SEGS graded Proof 64 Presentation/JR-6. While a common variety for circulation strikes, this is extremely rare in Proof. Perhaps two or three are known of this variety in Proof, and mintage for 1833 dimes in proof is estimated at 5 by PCGS. In terms of rarity, this coin certainly has that in abundance. Examination shows slight doubling on the stars and peripheral devices, the planchet apparently receiving at least two strikes by the dies. Mirrored fields are nearly complete, including inside the shield lines on the reverse. Further, the devices are deeply frosted, giving contrast between fields and device. The obverse displays very little toning, with a hint of gold around the rims, while the reverse is more toned with flecks of gold into the lettering. The reverse die shows a faint die crack from the rim through the D of UNITED to the E in the scroll below, but there is no sign of the crack from the rim to the lower leaves. Curiously, this die was used to strike 1834 proof dimes (JR-1) before it was used to strike 1833 dimes, in proof and for circulation, as the 1834 dimes don't show evidence of the reverse crack through the D, while all 1833 dimes show the crack, including this proof issue.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.
