1960s Rare Space Chess Set & Board. Board is 29.5" diameter & 1" thick with playing surface in center surrounded by sculpted lunar topography, craters and all. The table sits on three metal legs (24" long) whose feet resemble those of the LEM and are currently unmounted. Pieces are all cast metal. Pawns are astronauts in EVA gear (about 3" tall), bishops are astronauts in EVA gear and with exploration devise in their right hand (3.5" tall), knights are LEms (3.25"tall), rooks look like probes of some type (about 2.5" tall), Queens (about 1" shorter than kings) look something like command module and Kings look like nose cone (5" tall) Pieces are oxidized and otherwise aged that unfortunately make it difficult to tell the difference between the two sides. A bit of care and treatment will go a long way to restoring their original appearance. We have never seen any other space chess set, let alone any like this one. The "Space Lady" acquired this set sometime in the late 1960s for $1000.00.
