Roman Cavalry Flag Standard, c. 200 A.D. Rare. From the Roman Province of Syria (Syria was the wealthiest Roman province besides Egypt). Bronze (40.5cm, tall); decorated in repoussé with four registers depicting the Syrian Dieties of Jupiter Dolichenus and Juno Regina (worship of Jupiter Dolichenus was popular amongst Roman soliders) in the center standing atop a bull and goat respectively, above busts of Sol and Luna who together mean eternity, the lower register with the founders of Rome Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, each holding a horse, with flaming altars between them, Imperial Roman Eagle at the apex with a wreath in his beak. Excellent condition.
