McKenney, Col. Thomas L (1785-1859) Superintendent of Indian Affair under Presidents Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams, and Jackson, during which time he became quite knowledgeable about the history and customs of Native Americans and advocated for their rights, causing his dismissal by President Jackson. He is best known for the magnificent History of the Indian Tribes of North America, a three-volume collection of Native American biographies, accompanied by lithograph portraits originally published from 1836 to 1844 by McKenney and James Hall. The majority of the portraits were first painted in oil by Charles Bird King.

Signature ("Col. Thos. L. McKenney") penned on a 1¾ x 3" card, which is affixed to a larger yellow backing sheet, presumably from an autograph book. At the bottom of the leaf is a notation that McKenney signed the card on Feb. 27, 1858 "at the advanced age of One Hundred and four years." Light soiling.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.
