Gandhi, Mohandas K. "Mahatma" (1869-1948) Preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India. He led India to independence, employing nonviolent civil disobedience, and inspired civil rights movements around the world.

Autograph letter signed ("MK Gandhi"), in pencil, 1p, 8 x 6½", n.p., Nov. 26 (19)33. To L. Smith-Pearce, Raikumar College, Raipur. (C.P.), whom Gandhi addresses as "Dear Friend," regarding speaking to the "boys" at Raikumar College. "Sgt Shiekla has let me see your note to him. If your boys know Hindi more than English I shd like to speak to them in Hindi. If otherwise, I shd gladly speak in English…." Fine. With typed transmittal envelope.

At the time of this letter, Gandhi was in the midst of a one-year campaign to improve the lives of the untouchables, whom he called Harijans (the children of God).
