Hoover, Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover. Photo signed, 6½ x 10", n.p., n.d. A full-length portrait in a wooded environment with an American flag in the background, signed across the bottom of Mrs. Hoover's white dress and President Hoover's white trousers. The Hoovers met while both were studying at Stanford University. Soon after their marriage, Hoover accepted a job as a mining engineer for a private corporation in China, where they were caught up in the Boxer Rebellion. Their settlement in Tientsin was under heavy fire for almost a month; while Lou worked in the hospitals, Herbert directed the building of barricades. Both Hoovers learned Mandarin Chinese. Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) was the 31st President of the United States (1929-1933).
