In 1919 American Sylvia Beach opened her bookstore on the Left Bank, where writers such as James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Sherwood Anderson, Ezra Pound, Paul Valéry, André Gide, and other famous and soon-to-be famous writers gathered throughout the 20's. In 1922, under the imprint of Shakespeare and Company, Beach became the first publisher of James Joyce's Ulysses, then banned in every English-speaking country. Fascinating reading!
