Wellesley, Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) British soldier and statesman, hero of Waterloo; one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century.

Letter signed ("Wellington"), 1 p, 9 x 7", in French, "au quartier général à Paris," Nov. 13, 1815. To Major Winterfield of the Lubeck Battalion, "I received your letter of 26 October, and having considered what happened between Colonel Le Neil Campbell and you, I have written him a letter, of which I send you a copy…." The copy of Wellington's letter (in English) to Colonel Campbell is included. The letter concerns Campbell's unjustified reproach of a complete battalion, although only three officers had committed an offense. Five months earlier, on June 18, 1815, with the help of forces under the Prussian field marshal von Blücher, Wellington decisively defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. He remained in France for the next three years as head of the allied occupation forces.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.
