Taney, Roger Brooke (1777-1864) Fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1836-1864). He is most remembered for delivering the majority opinion in Dred Scott v. Sanford (1857), that ruled, among other things, that African-Americans, having been considered inferior at the time the constitution was drafted, were not part of the original community of citizens and, whether FREE or SLAVE, could not be considered citizens of the United States.

Autographed document signed, c. 1812, one page, 7½ x 12½", small tear upper right border. Taney pleads for the return of his client's goods and chattel, together with all costs and charges. Good condition.
