Lot 700

1816 N-2 R1. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown, at least 25% of the planchet still showing mint color. No notable spots, stains, or contact marks. A premium example in every respect, very close to gem. M-LDS with a rim cud from star 8 to star 11 and a smaller one at star 11.5. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state 1816-1820 cents, but this is one of the finest from the 1816's in that group. Called the "best" N-2 they had seen by C. Douglas Smith and Del Bland. Graded MS65 by Bland. Our grade is MS64+. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36527) .
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex William H. Webber 7/13/1973-C. Douglas Smith 3/1982-Del Bland-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
