Lot 830

1962, MA-7 FLOWN "Aurora 7" Aft Heatshield Section. "Aurora 7" carried Scott Carpernter on the fourth Mercury flight on May 24, 1962. This section (4.5x0.5x0.5" max dimension) of aft heatshield is from that mission. There is a square section of outer most portion showing the charring and white residue. Built of honeycombed aluminum with many layers of glass-fiber material, the heatshield would boil away as the Mercury capsule descended through the atmosphere. As the fiberglass melted, it deposited a white residue on its surface, resembling icing. Includes a handwritten, signed COA that reads in part: "This section of Aft heatshield is from Mercury Capsule #18, "Aurora 7. Given to me in mid 1963." Estimated Value $400 - 500

Realized $1,800
