Navigation Sighting Instrument From the Glomar Challenger. The instrument is 13 in. long, 4½ in. high, and circumference of the base on which it sits is 10 in. Engraved: "U.S.N. Bu. Ships / Telescopic Alidade, Mk. II, Mod. 2, N 7436". Housed in a wooden case with plaque from U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships and other information, including the contract number and "Kollmorgen Optical Corporation, 2 Franklin Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y." Plaque on top of case: "Glomar Challenger / 11 Aug. 1968 20 Nov. 1983." The Glomar Challenger was a deep sea research and scientific drilling vessel for oceanography and marine geology studies, sister ship of the famous Glomar Explorer, which was built for the CIA to recover the sunken Soviet submarine, K-129, which was lost in April 1968.
