Goethals, George W (1858-1928) U.S. Army officer and civil engineer, best known for supervising the construction and opening of the Panama Canal. Two typed letters signed ("Geo. W. Goethals"), both to J.S. Cullinan in Houston. The first is on his business letterhead, one page, 8½ x 11 in., New York, Nov. 2, 1925, regarding a trip to Texas "in connection with the Bay City situation and some work at Mercedes…." He also mentions harbor work in Hollywood, Florida, which he is considering. Very good; folds, a couple of rust marks from paper clips, and file notes at bottom. The second letter is one page, 5½ x 8½ in., New York, Feb. 3, 1928. Thanking Mr. Cullinan for "the beautiful floral tribute…sent to West Point [for] the last rites for my father…." Fine. In 1909 President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Goethals chief engineer of the Panama Canal. The Canal was completed in 1914, two years ahead of the target date of June 10, 1916. Estimated Value $300 - 400
