Barnard, Christiaan (1922-2001) South African cardiac surgeo who in 1967 performed the first successful heart transplant on a human being. Photo signed "Chris Barnard" in purple marker, 4¾ x 6½ in. With a typed letter whose signature has almost entirely faded, on University of Cape Town letterhead, telling an American man that he is enclosing "a metal-tip cannula which was used in the first human heart transplant operation to allow air to escape from the left ventricle of the heart before stopping cardiopulmonary bypass."
