Byrd, Admiral Richard E (1888-1957) U.S. naval officer, pioneer aviator, and polar explorer best known for his explorations of Antarctica. Vintage photo signed ("R E Byrd"), 8 x 10 in., n.p, n.d. Small printed item affixed to verso notes that the photo is just before Byrd took off for the South Pole and that he is holding the flag and a stone from the grave of Floyd Bennett (who piloted Byrd on his failed attempt to reach the North Pole in 1926). With a first day cover signed by Byrd, commemorating his visit to Fullerton, CA, and an unsigned 8 x 10 photo of the admiral in uniform. Estimated Value $300 - 400
