West, Benjamin (1738-1820) American-born painter who lived in London from 1763 and who painted historical scenes, including The Death of General Wolfe; he became the second president of the Royal Academy in London. Autograph letter signed (""Benjn. West"), one page, on laid paper, 8 x 9½ in., Herman Street, Feb. 27, 1793. To Alderman Boydell: "I shall be obliged, if you will send by the bearer--twelve prints of my Portrait-good impressions--that engraved by Miss Watson from Stewards picture, and with them the Bill of their price. Setting with my servant, I find he in my absence received from your messenger two guineas and a half for a pair of prints (Charles and Cromwell)….I have inclosed you the half guinea as your property, wishing to rectify the mistake as soon as possible…." Very good; one small early repair to center verso, chips at left corners, and overall age toning. Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500
