Cole, Thomas (1801-1848) English-born painter who emigrated to America in 1818; founder of the Hudson River School. Scarce, good content autograph letter signed, one page, 8 x 12½ in., Catskill, Dec. 13, 1842. To American art connoisseur J.P. Ridner in New York. In part: "…The picture is finished but I have had great difficulty in conseqence of the River being closed, in forwarding it in a manner to ensure its safety….The picture I consider one of the best I have ever painted & I have labored to get it done….I hope it will not get into any obscure place & that whoever gets it will be a resident of N. York. I myself would be willing to give the smaller Schroon picture, I mean the Lane, & a hundred dollars for it. Of course I do not wish you to mention this but if you find the picture going when you or I would not wish it, obtain it if you can. I assure you I never painted a picture for five hundred dollars that I would exchange for it…." Contemporary ink stains, moderate staining, and small tear at upper left, else very good.

Thomas Cole letters are extremely rare; ABPC does not list any sold for the past 25 years. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500

Realized $1,800
