[Elizabeth I] Privy Council. Manuscript letter, one page, 8½ x 12¼ in., dated from the Court at Greenwich, the last of December, 1594, and addressed to the Archbishop of Canterbury, John Whitgift; the Bishop of Rochester, Sir Thomas Scott, and Sir Edward Hobby. Appointing them Commissioners under the Great Seal of England, by order of Queen Elizabeth, to inquire into the state of all lands in Kent belonging to hospitals. Signed "Jo: Cant.," "Sir Jo. Puckeringe," "C. Howard," "T. Buckehurst," "Ro. Cecyll," "J. Waller," and "J. Fortescue." Small areas of earlier paper replacement at right margin, affecting a few words, and on integral leaf. Signatures are all intact. Overall toning and light soiling.

The Archbishop of Canterbury was the celebrated John Whitgift, a rare autograph; Sir John Puckering was lord keeper of the great seal; Charles Howard was the famous Lord Howard of Effingham; Thomas Sackville, Lord Buckhurst, afterwards first Earl of Dorset, was Grandmaster of the Freemasons; Robert Cecil was son of the great Lord Burleigh, and afterwards first Earl of Salisbury; and Sir John Fortescue was Chancellor of the Exchequer. A fine combination of rare signatures of famous Elizabethans. Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500
