Lot 38

1787 New Jersey Maris 58-n Rarity-5 "Camel Head" VF25. Struck over a Connecticut copper. Ten points sharper but covered with extremely faint roughness under a glossy dark olive brown and steel patina. No contact marks or verdigris. There are several small planchet voids on the reverse mixed in with designs from the Connecticut copper that was overstruck with the New Jersey dies. AUCTORI from the Connecticut is visible at the bottom of the shield, but there is not enough undertype available to attribute it to a Miller die variety. Rare LDS with the obverse die broken into three distinct pie-shaped wedges. Weight 133.1 grains. Listed on page 70 in the "Redbook." And it comes with a great provenance. Estimated Value $1,000-UP
