Lot 2432

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III, the Great, Silver Tetradrachm (17.1g), 336-323 BC. Mint of Ake, minted 327-305 BC. AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, date; below throne, aleph. Price 3272b and 3274 (yrs. 26, 28 and 29 respectively, all with aleph). Some deposits appears on the obverse that could be removed. Very Fine.
The dates on these Alexandrine tetradrachms from Ake are illegible more often than not. The date on this coin appears to read year 22. However, there is the Phoenician letter aleph below the throne, which is not recorded for tetradrachms before year 26 (Price 3267).

Note that Price attributes this coin to the mint at Ake in Phoenicia. Le Rider has recently reassigned it to the mint at Tyre, and he also down-dated the issue by one year (see Le Rider, Alexander the Great: Coinage, Finances, and Policy pp. 126ff). Estimated Value $400 - 450

Realized $322
