Lot 149

1794 S-52 R6- VG8+. Sharpness F12, perhaps even slightly better on the obverse, but there is a planchet lamination on the forehead extending down to the earlobe where it fades away, and another very shallow lamination between the tops of the I & B in LIBERTY, both as struck. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth with very faint roughness under glossy olive brown and chocolate toning. No verdigris, and the only signs of contact are some faint hairline scratches hidden in the toning on the cheek and highpoints of the hair, all visible only with the aid of a glass. The date is strong and the legends are complete and clear. EDS, Breen state I, before the die crack from the rim to the top of the cap. A nice example of this rare die variety, near the lower end of the condition census. Estimated Value $3,000-UP

Realized $4,025
