Lot 265

1797 S-124 R5+ F12. Sharpness VF30 but covered with uniform fine granularity under a rather glossy greenish olive brown patina. The highpoints are a lighter shade of steel brown. No verdigris, and the only marks are a very dull scratch in the field before the portrait and another off the tip of the nose. MDS, Breen state IV, with die clashmarks under the hair ribbon and obvious swelling at the 797 and bust tip. A variety that is very difficult to find nice; the finest grades only F15. Removed from an NCS slab graded VF Details, Corroded (NCS label included, and it shows the attribution and Jules Reiver provenance).
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex Penn Valley Coin Co. 12/1/1966-Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24/2006:19319.
