Rhee, Syngman (1875-1965) First president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea (1919-1925); first president of South Korea (1948-1960). Typed letter signed as President of South Korea, 1 page, 8½ x 11 in., Seoul, Korea, 29 May 1949. To Gen. John Hilldring, writing that he had been trying to think of a position where Hilldring's "influence would be most helpful in promoting better understanding and cooperation between our two countries." He suggests that Gen. Hilldring act as either Military Advisor or as Liaison Officer to Korea's Washington's Embassy. The answer was to be put into a Diplomatic Pouch by the Korean ambassador and sent to Syngman.
