[British Royal Navy] Admiral of the Fleet James Gambier, 1st Baron Gambier (1756-1833) Admiral of the Royal Navy; served as Governor of Newfoundland, and as a Lord of the Admiralty. After the Battle of the Basque Roads (1809), Captain Lord Cockrane accused Gambier of being reluctant to press the attack; Gambier demanded a court martial and was exonerated. In 1813 he was part of the team negotiating the Treaty of Ghent, ending the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States. Address panel free franked "Gambier" 14 August 1816. Red stamped crown-shaped cancellation.
