Lot 47

1796 S-81 R3- Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC Approved. Glossy light steel brown in protected areas blending to dark steel brown on the highpoints. No roughness or marks, only a bit of dirt hidden in some of the protected areas around the devices. Nicely struck except for the usual weakness at EN in CENT (which did not receive enough of the planchet metal thanks to the high profile of the opposing head). EDS, Breen state I, prior to the obverse die crack. Graded EF40 Average Plus and tied for CC#8 in the Noyes census, photo #39445. Our grade is VF35+, close to EF40. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label. Pop 2; 1 finer in 63.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
Ex Denis Loring-Tom Reynolds 8/2002-Paul Gerrie.

Realized $17,250
