Empire of Nicaea. John III Ducas-Vatazes, 1222-1254. Gold Hyperpyron (4.57 g). Magnesia. Christ enthroned facing with crossed nimbus, wearing pallium and colobium, raising hand in benediction and holding Book of Gospels. Reverse: John on left, standing facing and holding labarum, crowned by the Virgin. DO 5.9; Sear 2073. Unusually well struck with excellent detail. We note some graffiti in the left reverse margins not effecting design.
