Sicily, Syrakuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Silver Tetradrachm (17.1g) struck ca. 440-430 BC. Fast quadriga left, the charioteer holding reins and kentron; above, Nike (Victory) flying right to crown charioteer; in exergue, ketos (off flan). Reverse: ΣVPAKOΣI - ON. Head right of Arethusa, hair drawn into a korymbos (top-knot off flan), wearing wire choker; around four dolphins. Boehringer 604 (V296/R410); SNG ANS 199 (same obverse die); Jameson 775 (same dies); Nanteuil 343 (same dies); Weber 1588 (same dies). Fine delicate style with soft pastel tones.
