Lot 222

1794 S-57 R1 VF25. Close to VF30 but there are a few light rim bruises at the cap, a tiny scratch in the field before the neck, and a small nick on the T in UNITED. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and choice, nearly flawless. Glossy olive brown and steel. E-MDS, Breen state II. The die "trenches" in the field before the face are faint but the die clashmarks on the reverse are clear. Called VF30 net VF25 in the Noyes census, his photo #39507. An attractive cent and it comes with a long, impressive provenance. In addition, the H & D in HUNDRED are filled with yellow ink indicating ownership by Homer K. Downing.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
