Lot 1779

1874-CC. NGC graded AU-58. Only 16,767 minted of which merely 250 examples are estimated to have survived. Frosty and mostly untoned. A beautiful specimen with superb eye appeal, this 1874-CC is at once a rarity and a Condition Census coin, one of the top several finest known. The striking is typical for the variety, with some lightness on the high points of the hair, although the star centers are much better defined than usual, while on the reverse, the lower part of the eagle, claws, branch stem, and arrow feather show weakness. Perhaps these aspects are moot, for all genuine 1874-CC eagles seem to possess variations on this striking theme.

The surfaces are a fresh, light reddish gold with abundant luster in the protected areas extending well into the field, this frost blending nicely with the field areas which suggests only a brief time spent in circulation. In the present age of grading strictness, we can state that coins of this caliber are rarely encountered. For the Carson City specialist this, indeed, is a find of the first order of importance! Pop 3; 1 finer in 65 (PCGS # 8670) .
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

Realized $28,750
