Lot 144

1797 C-3a R3 Low Head with Plain Edge G4. Struck over a cut-down Off-Center Large Cent. The obverse is slightly better while the reverse is weaker, which is typical of the Low Head variety thanks to a disparity in the protective rims. The surfaces are smooth displaying only a few tiny contact marks, none notable. Glossy dark olive and steel. The date is strong and LIBERTY is clear, but only slightly more than half of the legend on the reverse is visible. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any die break from the chin. Struck slightly off center to K-2. Undertype from the off-center large cent shows on the obverse, particularly STA from STATES arcing through the top of the cap. Weight 74.8 grains.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

Realized $460
