Statesmen and Presidential Candidates: Henry Clay, Horatio Seymour and James G. Blaine. Henry Clay (1777-1852) Statesman and orator; presidential candidate in 1824; Secretary of State (1825-29) as part of the "Corrupt Bargain"; known as "The Great Compromiser." Autograph Document Signed ("Clay") as a young lawyer, one page, 12¾ x 8", Woodford County (Kentucky), n.d. (c. 1802). Suing the estate of David Rowland for £40 due Clay's client, William Ellis, assignee of John Breckenridge. Horatio Seymour (1810-1886) Governor of New York (1853-1854, 1863-1864); presidential nominee of the Democratic Party in 1868, but lost to Ulysses S. Grant. 1883 ALS to Governor (Chauncey Fitch) Cleveland resigning as Commissioner of the State Survey for health reasons. James G. Blaine (1830-1893) Politician who served in the House, the Senate, and twice as Secretary of State; as the Republican presidential nominee,he was narrowly defeated by Grover Cleveland in 1884. 1890 ALS to Mr. and Mrs. Hazen offering sympathy on the death of her father, whom he lauds. Condition varies from very good to fine.
