Lot 517

1799 S-189 R2 G6. Sharpness VF20 or better where properly impressed, but the strike was uneven leaving the date and bust tip very weak while everything else is strong. Breen mentions this was caused by having the die faces out of proper parallel alignment, what he calls "axial misalignment" (see the Breen encyclopedia, page 544, for a discussion of how this striking problem affected so many of the 1799 S-189 cents). The planchet is covered with light to moderate roughness and the lower third of the obverse is covered with light horizontal scratches, all blended perfectly into the natural dark olive and steel patina. In addition the planchet displays a very subtle bend. No verdigris. E-MDS, Breen state II.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

Realized $920
