Lot 498

1793 S-11c R3- Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge. PCGS graded AU-50. Variety with a single leaf following DOLLAR. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate with slightly lighter brown toning in protected areas on the obverse. Smooth and quite attractive with no trace of corrosion or verdigris. This variety is plagued with planchet flaws, but this planchet is nearly perfect. The only defect is a small comet-like swipe of brassy impurity in the field before the neck, and a thin void is located inside the brassy area. Otherwise this planchet is choice. Just a few contact marks, including a diagonal nick on the cheek, a couple rim nicks opposite the mouth, and another dull rim nick left of the lowest curl. There is a depression arcing just inside the edge at K-4 to K-6 on the obverse, a result of an aborted planchet cutter impression. This mark affects some of the border beads but it is not distracting at all. EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks. Struck slightly off center to K-2 leaving some border beads off the planchet on both sides. Our grade is EF40. The edge lettering is not visible in the slab, but the S-11c Lettered Edge variety designation is included on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
