Lot 467

1793 C-3 R3 Liberty Cap NGC graded XF details, rim damage. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown with smooth surfaces. No corrosion or verdigris, only a few marks. The "Rim Damage" mentioned by NGC is a planchet flaw (incomplete planchet mint error) left of the bust tip. This defect was created when the planchet was cut too close to the ragged end or edge of the planchet strip, and it affects perhaps a dozen of the border beads on both sides. Otherwise the only marks are three small rim bumps on each side, including two under the date, one left of the neck, two more at the bottom of the reverse, and one more at TE in UNITED. Nicely struck EDS. Perhaps this one would be better served in a slab with a "Mint Error" label. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net VF25.
Estimated Value $6,000-UP.
