Lot 397

1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny with .17 over 172 Breen-135. NGC graded Fine-12. Attractive glossy chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on some of the highpoints. Smooth and choice. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-5 but the reverse is centered on the planchet. This is the extremely rare (according to Breen) variety with .17 over 172, and the undertype error is clearly visible. Apparently the die sinker forgot to add the stop (period) following DULCI before punching in the first 3 digits of the date, then corrected his error. An obvious error and the first of this variety seen by this cataloger. The error or Breen variety are not noted on the NGC label. See page 41 in the "Redbook."
Estimated Value $100-UP.

Realized $483
