Justinian II, 685-695. Gold Solidus (4.22 g) minted at Constantinople. Bust of Christ facing, holding book of Gospels. Reverse: Justinian II standing, holding cross potent on two steps. D.O. 7; S. 1248. Some areas of weakness around the legends as struck; fully lustrous. Mint State.

The portraits of Christ and of Justinian II are superb with exceptional detail. In great demand, mainly because Justinian II was the first emperor to employ a likeness of Christ.
