Lot 1140

1851 $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Flashy luster and well struck, but the surfaces show the usual billion or so tiny surface ticks. As the large gold coins circulated, or were passed about in bags and leather pouches, the delicate fields quickly became bagmarked with tiny criss-crossing tickmarks. Finding any early double eagle without these is nearly impossible, as the regular day to day handling seems to have caused the surfaces the quickly be bathed in minor handling ticks. Always popular with collectors, these early Type I double eagles can be had for a song, with very little downside because of the gold content. Loads of history is included for the nominal price.
Estimated Value $700 - 900.

Realized $1,495
