Lot 48

1837 N-10 R1 Beaded Hair Cord, Head of 1838 MS63. The "Accessory N" variety. Lustrous bluish steel brown and chocolate blending to olive with traces of faded mint red showing on the obverse while 10% of the reverse displays brighter mint color. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is excellent. The only marks, and they are not at all distracting, are a shallow rim nick at star 5, a very light scuff in the field under star 13, and a speck of dark toning on the right foot of the second T in STATES. Nicely struck E-MDS, prior to any rim cud breaks on the obverse. Traces of the stray "N" punched into the leaves below the N in UNITED are visible (the so-called "Accessory N"). Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #36909. Now housed in a PCGS MS65+ BN holder. (PCGS # 37135).
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex "Met Sale" 7/9/82:54-John J. Nicholas 4/12/85-R. E. Naftzger, Jr. (via Bill Noyes) 4/2002, The Northwest Collection.
